The riders, horses, and stories behind Sunday Classic. We keep notes the way you keep a tack room — a little worn, entirely honest, and full of things worth going back for.
Every issue follows one rider through a weekend: the early schooling, the waiting, the trip that finally comes together, and everything unglamorous in between.
Warm-up ring, 7:14 a.m.
Fog still sitting low over the far field. Boots wet through by the second trip. Nobody talks much before the first round — just the sound of hooves on damp footing and someone's coffee going cold on a tack trunk.
On the right kind of clothes
Good clothes get quieter the more you wear them. Collars soften. Green fades a half shade. A shirt that looked new in June looks like yours by August — that is the whole idea.
The long ride home
Ribbons in the cupholder, shavings in the floormats, a gas station sandwich, and the radio low. The best part of the day is almost always the drive back.
